Job Summary
The Permanent Machine Operator is responsible for operating and maintaining all certified work equipment machinery in the assigned area. The incumbent carries out such other duties as may be required, although these may normally be performed by Road Workers, such as inspecting, repairing and replacing rails, joints, switches and ballast.

Education
Once hired, the incumbent participates in formal and on-the-job training. In order to work as a permanent Machine Operator, the position must successfully complete the training program.
This position is a union position. Therefore, wages and benefits are subject to the valid collective agreement.
Major Responsibilities
- Operate heavy equipment on and off rail to support rail repair and maintenance activities such as:
- Remove and replace faulty ties, rail nails and anchors
- Correct deviations in rail surface, alignment and dimensions
- Install and repair street and railroad crossings
- Distribute part material
- Clear bushes, vegetation, snow and debris from the right-of-way of the railway
- Establishing and maintaining drainage
- Inspection and maintenance of heavy equipment
- Perform other duties as may be assigned where the job does not require the operation of machinery, including road inspection and other road maintenance duties
- Comply with rail safety standards, work rules and safe working procedures
Working Conditions
- Must be available for shift work and occasional overtime
- The role may occasionally be required to work outside of the assigned headquarters location.
- Ability to perform physical work outdoors in various weather and environmental conditions
- Must be able to perform repetitive physical activities throughout the shift
- Must be able to occasionally lift and carry up to 50 pounds (22 kg) and 70 pounds (32 kg)
- Must be able to supply basic personal tools for equipment maintenance
- The incumbent is headquartered outside (name of locations) and begins work at that location
- The role may occasionally require reporting elsewhere or working away from home.
- When required to work away from headquarters, travel and other expenses are paid to the officer in accordance with the collective agreement.
- Must have good hand-eye coordination and grasping ability
Employment Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent General Education Diploma (GED)
- Valid Driver’s License
- Collaborates and shares information with others
- Demonstrates active listening
- Relevant work experience in similar working conditions*
- Post-secondary trade education*
- Experience or education in mechanics*
- Knowledge of Signals or Rail Operating Rules*
- Any experience/training/skills/knowledge related to the above will be considered an asset.
