LOCATION RESPONSIBILITIES:
Duties of this position may include but are not limited to:
- Emergency response service is provided 24/7 in our Communication Unit.
- Provide superior customer service to community members in emergency and non-emergency capacities.
- Prioritizing service calls by obtaining accurate information through interrogation techniques, ensuring the safety of the caller, the public and our officers.
- Ensuring the safety of community members and officers by establishing York Regional Police Procedures.
- Using the computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system and various police databases to generate calls for service and provide officers with direction in responding to calls in a fast-paced work environment.
- Directing callers to appropriate resources and liaising with neighboring police, emergency and fire services.
- Identifying operational needs for responding officers and providing appropriate direction for call response.
- To ensure the most efficient response time by tracking the officer’s location and status.
- Monitoring radio frequencies and sending calls for assigned service.
- Exposure to constant distractions and a work environment with high levels of activity, noise, and lack of privacy.
- Exposure to high stress, rotating work schedules, and prolonged periods of sitting, talking, typing, radio broadcasts, and telephone conversations
MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS:
- Successful completion of a one (1) year certificate in telecommunications or a two (2) year diploma in a related field.
- Alternatively, experience working at a primary Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) center may also be considered.
- Minimum two (2) years of relevant customer service experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Completion of the Emergency Response Communications program/certification is preferred.
- Preferably with experience in large volume power plants and emergency services.
- General knowledge of York Region road systems and the ability to interpret maps.
- Ability to operate a computer-aided dispatch system and various related interface systems preferred.
- An entity knowledge of emergency system processes, organization structure and hierarchy, and communication procedures.
- Solid organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.
- Skills in dealing tactfully with others in a high-stress environment.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a harmonious team environment
- Demonstrated problem solving and decision making abilities.
- Ability to multitask, set priorities, and work in a fast-paced and challenging environment.
