POSITION DESCRIPTION:Are you looking for an exciting career? Being a Train Conductor is the perfect career for you! As a Train Conductor, you will begin your long-term rewarding career at CP.
As a Train Conductor, you will work as a member of a train crew helping to change cars, build or segment trains, or move cars between yards, sidings or tracks;
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Depending on their seniority, they can work in train or shipyard services;
- Follow special instructions detailing a train’s route and specific movements;
- Can perform switching operations of cabinets, including connecting and disconnecting cabinets, and remove connecting device;
- Observe, interpret and transmit signals and other indicators affecting the movement of the train;
- Using specific signals or radio for engine or train movement, signal crew members to indicate when to start, stop, back up, set or release air brakes;
- Provide flag protection and relay signals to trains in emergency situations, as specified in the operating rules;
- Switch on and off moving or fixed equipment when the train is changing industrial, station or site;
- Ride in a moving car, sometimes for long periods of time, by hanging on to the grab rails or ladder;
- Prepares necessary clear and legible reports by filling out forms containing train orders and transfer lists;
- Work irregular hours and up to 12 hours, including holidays, weekends, days and nights;
- Must be constantly alert to changing conditions and events and take safe and responsible actions when necessary.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- High School Graduation or General Equivalency Diploma (GED);
- 3 to 5 years of work experience with a proven record of safe work;
- Valid full/graduate driver with no restrictions required;
- Must be at least 18 years old;
- Demonstrated mechanical ability;
- Must be able to work with minimal supervision;
- Ability to take actions and/or make decisions that affect the safety/well-being of others, i.e., the ability to warn others of unsafe conditions;
- Must have good spatial ability in terms of a sense of order and space, as well as the ability to judge the speed and/or distance of moving objects;
- Able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing;
- Good interpersonal skills with the ability to work as a contributing member of a team;
- Must be prepared to work weekends and shifts – be on call 24 hours a day with 2 hours notice depending on location (except Annual Holiday);
- The job may require extended periods of time away from home;
- Must be able to pass required examinations and read and understand safety instructions, rule books, instructions and regulations, timetables, bulletins, delivery notes, banners and other written or printed materials;
- Must be prepared to work in adverse weather conditions;
- You may need to lift up to 80 lbs.
- Must be able to cross the border into the United States for business purposes;
- Must be able to obtain a passport.
