Ocean Country Partnership Program (OCPP) Scholarships funded through the UK Blue Planet FundIt offers students from the South Pacific a unique opportunity to study a fully-funded Masters or PhD. in marine science.
Our oceans are vital to all life on Earth; supporting the livelihoods, food security and cultural traditions of communities around the world. But the accumulation of marine pollution increasingly threatens fragile underwater ecosystems and has become one of the most pressing environmental problems of our time.
Universities and university researchers have a vital role in combating marine pollution and producing solutions that will ensure the sustainable use of marine resources.
Degree Level:
Apply for UK Governments Ocean Country Partnership Program Scholarships 2023, available to undertake Masters, PhD level programs at UK Universities.
Aimed at early and mid-career researchers looking to develop a career in marine sciences in the Solomon Islands or Vanuatu, OCPP scholarships will support world-class research and innovation in the field of marine pollution. Applications for doctoral study will also be accepted from citizens of other Pacific Island countries.
Hosted by the University of the South Pacific, the scholarships will enable academics in the South Pacific to leverage their regional knowledge, conduct vital research and help develop solutions to marine environmental challenges.
The purpose of the scholarships is to support scientific research that will contribute to the conservation and sustainable management of marine resources. This first set of OCPP Fellowships will strengthen the capacity of partner countries in the South Pacific to combat marine pollution, support the development of sustainable resource management and strengthen responses to marine environmental challenges.
Fellowships can facilitate a range of potential projects and research topics, including:
- To reduce marine pollution through actions aimed at land-based and water-based resources, and to contribute to improved living conditions and healthier environments.
- Evidence collection, tool and technology development, data analysis, modeling and impacts of pollution on marine species, habitats and humans.
- Applications are accepted under the OCPP marine pollution theme, which covers all types of pollution, including chemicals and heavy metals, nutrients and eutrophication, microbiological pollutants, pathogens and marine debris.

Nationals of the Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Tokelau, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu are eligible to apply for a PhD in the following fields, but only in Vanuatu or Solomon Islands if their research is focused or direct:

Scholarship Benefits:
Scholarships will be given to master’s students for 18 months and to doctoral candidates for 3 years. Each successful buyer will have the following rights:
- Tuition fees (including general fees and medical fees)
- living allowance
- Research support grant
- Travel assistance (as applicable)
- Dependent, disability and maternity expenses (case by case)

Eligibility Criteria:
- Applicants for the Master’s degree must be citizens of Solomon Islands or Vanuatu and normally reside there.
- Applications for PhD study will be accepted from citizens of other Pacific Island countries (Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Tokelau, Samoa, Tonga and Tuvalu), but only if their research is focused or directly applicable. Vanuatu or Solomon Islands.
- Must be working or have significant work experience in the fields of environmental, fisheries and aquaculture science.
- Must have a bachelor’s or undergraduate degree.
- It should propose a research topic that is innovative, timely, and likely to lead to a clearly demonstrated broader impact beyond the academic community.
- Applicants must meet the eligibility criteria for postgraduate study at the host University.
